Jay and Flint with a very productive day on the Flint. Fall bite is on. Numbers are slightly down but the trophy sized fish are showing up! Dennis best 5 today weighed 26 plus. Landed 7 over 5 today and released 58 bass. We had a productive day with some much-appreciated cooler weather. The fishing is getting better by the day. Jerkbaits and topwater worked the best. Great day on the water with Jack Mitchell. We stay in Orihula for almost 30 years now and camping is currently closed. Hoping it is open for May 14thth. Launched from Chico's about and idled upriver to just above Triangle Camp Ground. Made four drifts and picked up four males of which we kept three.
Soon had a ton of boats on the same drift pattern, so we headed down stream. Picked up one nice white bass just below Chico's, then went to the Rat.
Made a half dozen drifts from the Rat to below the Cut, finally picking up the remaining three for our two man limit. The wind played havoc in the afternoon. Nothing on plastics, minnows were the preferred bait. All fish were caught in 9 to 12 fow. Also how the drop in water temps affects the bite. Caught 2 males right away.
Finally found another one after a few spots. Lots of boats on the river. Fished from Jenny's down to red banks. Water at gills landing was below the seawall. Fishing is good around Gills and then down river.

Depending on water conditions and number of fish in the weir, fish are usually processed on Mondays and Thursdays. Root River Steelhead Facility. The water levels on the river increased quickly last week due to rain and snow. This made for tougher fishing conditions. Some anglers were still spotted. Salmon along with Steelhead and Brown trout were the most commonly targeted fish. Some fishing success among the few anglers was reported. A small mix of Chinook and Coho salmon were caught using flies and fake spawn.
The water levels and water current were both high north of the facility. Downstream of the Weir: Activity south of the facility also slowed down significantly over the last week.
Only a small handful of anglers were seen fishing using flies or spawn on fly fishing tackle. Anglers downstream of the facility were targeting salmon as well as Steelhead or Brown trout. No catches were recorded. The water levels downstream of the facility were also very high.
The high water levels caused swiftly moving water as well as low visibility. The water temp at the end of the week was 43 degrees. The river level continues to drop, and was cfs Thursday morning.
The water temperature in the facility dropped to 38 degrees. This was our final processing day at the weir for the fall, and the facility has been shut down until spring.
